WHAT'S HAPPENING AT CMY?

Multicultural Sports Network Update

How can sports link in with emerging community groups in interesting and inventive ways? Developing working relationships with community and educational organisations that hold a strong position at a grassroots level can be advantageous for all involved, particularly young people.

CMY’s Multicultural Sports Network Meeting in July 2008 looked at the ways some sports and peak bodies have tapped into the community sector to develop strong innovative programs. The workshop involved four rotating stations in which representatives from sporting, community and educational organisations discussed programs and initiatives that link newly arrived and refugee young people into sport and recreation.

After every Sport Network Meeting a tip sheet is created as a resource for the sector. Tip Sheet 11, entitled ‘Sports partnerships to connect with communities’ is now available for download from
the Publications and Resources section. www.cmy.net.au/MulticulturalSport/PublicationsandResources

CMY’s next Sports Network Meeting will be held in October at will look at the issue of newly arrived young people with disabilities and their opportunities to access sport and recreation.

Multicultural Sport and Recreation Team update

Aqua Rec Conference ‘08
Shane Cooke recently presented at Aqua Rec, the aquatic and recreation industry conference, in Melbourne. The conference deals with the most topical and pertinent issues regarding the management of aquatic and recreation facilities. Along with Lifesaving Victoria and Victorian Arabic Social Services, Shane presented a session entitled ‘Programming for diverse communities’. This looked at the barriers and inclusive strategies for newly arrived and refugee young people to get into sport and recreation opportunities, and the programs that CMY haa been involved in. The presentation will be available for viewing by the middle of September at the Aquatics and Recreation Victoria website.

Uniform grants
Thanks to the Minister for Sport, Recreation and Youth Affairs, The Hon James Merlino, CMY had the opportunity to nominate sporting clubs to receive $1,000 uniform grants. CMY nominated 24 local groups whose members are made up of newly arrived and refugee young people, to receive the grants that will help them dress for success. The grants were made possible through budget savings from the 2006 Melbourne Commonwealth Games. The Our Club, Our Future Sporting Uniform Grants Program has provided the funds to support 1,500 clubs throughout Victoria with a particular focus on disadvantaged areas. Congratulations to the 24 clubs CMY nominated to receive uniform grants!

Team Africa
CMY’s Claudia Abakah is proud to have been involved in the development of Team Africa for the 2008 AFL International Cup. Read more about the International Cup at the AFL website. "The concept of a team in the 2008 Australian Football International Cup to represent Africa came after the early success of the AFL Multicultural Program in engaging these communities. Community leaders with ties to the African Community wanted to participate in this exciting AFL event and Team Africa was born. " (Australian Football International Cup Official Program, Nick Hatzoglou, 2008)

CMY Clifton Hill/Collingwood Cup
This soccer event was held on Monday 4 August. It was a spirited game with Clifton Hill just winning the inaugural trophy. The game will be held every six months. The turnout was fantastic with more that 35 participants and 120 sausages consumed! A trophy and barbecue was sponsored by CMY. Partners included Jesuit Social Services, Victoria Police, City of Yarra, Clifton hill Primary School and Collingwood Primary School and Football Federation Victoria.

Refugee Week
CMY, in partnership with Banksia Gardens Community Centre held a Cultural and Sports event on Sunday 15 June to celebrate Refugee Week. It was a great day with more than 85 young people participating in the event.

Basketball Competition
A Cross-Community Women’s Basketball tournament took place during the June school holidays, with teams from Carlton, Preston, Dandenong and Reservoir competing in a friendly round robin-style event. Held at Coburg Basketball Stadium, around 50 young women (mostly from Melbourne’s African communities) participated in matches and a Halal Barbeque put on by the staff involved. MVP awards were handed out to the players who showed both skill and sports(wo)manship. Thanks must go out to the partner organisations involved in making the day so successful. The event is set to run on the first Friday of every school holidays.

Good News Stories
Thanks must go out to all those who responded to CMY’s recent request for Good News Stories. CMY asked for stories about newly arrived and/or refugee young people getting involved in sport and recreation opportunities in Australia. Responses rolled in from a variety of sectors and from many of the states which is great to see. If you would still like to send through a good news story please visit the Sport and Recreation website homepage.

Training
CMY’s Sport and Recreation team have extensive experience in offering culturally aware training packages that look at barriers for participation and strategies to engage young people from newly arrived and refugee backgrounds in sport and recreation opportunities. Funded through PICSAR, CMY’s sport and recreation team can offer training sessions to state sporting associations, leisure centres, community organisations and local clubs at grassroots levels. If your group, club or organisation would like more information about the training available, please contact Carolyn - cfavier@cmy.net.au.

Carolyn Favier - cfavier@cmy.net.au
Carolyn has been working closely with Four Diegos Media and the Australian Sports Commission on the online coaching resource for multicultural communities, soon to be available online through the ASC’s Play by the Rules website. The resource will highlight the virtues of culturally inclusive clubs and strategies for coaches and volunteers to support the involvement of young people from diverse backgrounds to access their sport.

Nick Mac Hale - nmachale@cmy.net.au

Belle Woods - cwoods@cmy.net.au
Belle’s project in Ballarat is the ‘Central Highlands Active Migrant Program’ (CHAMP). The target groups for the project will be refugee young people and their families from Sudan, Congo and Togo and any other Humanitarian entrants that arrive during the project period. There will also be a secondary focus on international students and newly arrived skilled migrants who are identified as not participating in physical activity. The project aims to address barriers experienced by newly arrived communities in the Central Highlands Region and thereby increase participation rates and social inclusion. Belle is currently working to set up a steering committee for the CHAMP project.

Allie Douglas - adouglas@cmy.net.au
Allie’s project around Coaching and Officiating aims to link newly arrived migrants and refugees with sporting associations, giving them the opportunity to coach or officiate in a number of sports. Initially the project will focus on football, basketball, AFL, netball, lawn bowls and swimming, although sports will be chosen after consultation with the community. The project will work to create pathways for newly arrived communities, and also to create more inclusive coaching and officiating accreditation within state and local sporting associations.

WHAT'S HAPPENING AROUND MELBOURNE

Youlden Parkville Cricket Club’s junior cricket program
Registration day: Saturday 1 November, 11am
Ryder Oval pavillion (Park Street, Parkville - Melway reference 29 F10-11)

In 2007 a junior cricket program was launched by Youlden Parkville Cricket Club (YPCC), on the border of Brunswick and Parkville. Backed by Cricket Victoria and Milo, the program ran from November to early March. With activities lasting for around one hour each Saturday morning, this program attracted around 50 boys and girls between the ages of 6-8 years of age.

The program was easy going and designed to encourage boys and girls to have fun while learning the basic skills of cricket. Strong support from parents and club volunteers resulted in a program that was exciting and entertaining for all.

In 2008, YPCC’s junior program is expanding to include boys and girls from 6 to 10 years of age. It is expected that the program will cater for up to 70-80 children, and involve around 100-120 people in a weekly activity of real importance to the community.

The club is building strong relations with local schools, businesses, community groups in the inner north of Melbourne and is looking to attract participants and support for the junior program. YPCC is extending an invitation to families, community groups, and businesses who may like to participate/contribute to the program’s success. Sessions take place on Saturdays from November to February.

For more information contact Dr George Myconos, Junior Programs Coordinator on 0425 746 055 or

Young Muslim Women’s Participation in Sports and Recreation report

Sport is very much part of the Australian culture. Although sport itself is a universal activity, it is also a uniquely Australian affair shaped by what is often referred to as the Australian lifestyle. Yet sports and recreational activities in Australia are not always entirely inclusive, particularly for people from culturally and linguistically diverse groups such as Muslim young women - physical, cultural, social, economic and religious barriers may limit their participation in sports and recreation.

This report from the
Youth Affairs Network of Queensland (YANQ) is the result of a research project that aimed to identify and analyse socio-cultural barriers affecting Muslim young women’s participation in sports and recreation, and to develop strategies that promote a greater participation in sports and recreation by young Muslim women in Queensland.
