Leisure Centre Capacity Building Project - CMY Sport and Recreation

Leisure Centre Capacity Building Project

Through our VicHealth funding, CMYI has been working to increase culturally and linguistically diverse (CLD) young people’s access to recreation and leisure centres.

Creating a Level Playing Field in More than Just Sport - Report

In 2006, CMYI completed the report - Creating a Level Playing Field in More than Just Sport - which looked at young people access and use of leisure centres within the City of Yarra. This report includes recommendations for making leisure centres more accessible and inclusive of CLD young people.

Leisure Centre Forum: A great opportunity for dialogue - 4 September 2006

On 4th September, CMYI in partnership with Kinect Australia and the Centre for Culture, Ethnicity and Health (CEH), held a Forum on CLD Young People’s Access to Leisure Centres. The forum’s primary aim was to engage staff in the leisure and fitness sector as well as local government who want to increase access to CLD young people. It was also an opportunity to showcase best practice, come up with strategies from discussions at the focus groups, develop recommendations, and produce resources for the sector based on information from the forum.

45 people attended the forum held at VicHealth in Carlton, which featured a number of presentations on engaging CLD young people in leisure activities.
Alex Prado from CMYI’s Multicultural Sport and Recreation Project launched the report ‘Creating a Level Playing Field in More Than Just a Sport – A Report on CLD Young People’s Access and Participation in Leisure & Recreation Centres Within the City of Yarra’. This report is available to download from CMYI’s website here.

Chrissy Billings
, the Access for All Abilities and Program Development Officer from the City of Yarra, delivered an exciting presentation on the ‘Women Making Waves Program’. Jo Hansen, YMCA Area Manager, delivered another engaging presentation on the various YMCA programs that actively engage CLD youth in physical activity. Maree Jones, the manager of the St Albans Leisure Centre, presented some very useful and practical information on how to set up a women’s only swimming program. And finally, Chris Stewart, the Disability Planner for the City of Greater Dandenong, introduced the photo exhibition ‘Journeys’, which was one of the outcomes of a project that engaged CLD people with a disability in leisure opportunities.

Focus groups at the forum provided invaluable information about existing programs that engage CLD youth in leisure options, the barriers that prevent engagement, and strategies to overcome these barriers. CMYI, Kinect Australia and CEH are in the process of collating this information and embarking on the next step of the project, which will be to produce resources for organisations based on the information gathered at the forum.
