Reconnect & NAYSS Good Practice Forums (June/July 2007)
|
The 2007 Reconnect & NAYSS Good Practice Forums were funded by FaHCSIA as a key component in the ongoing development strategy for Reconnect and NAYSS. The Forums were coordinated by the Centre for Multicultural Youth Issues (CMYI) and were open to two workers from each of the NAYSS* and Reconnect Programs nation wide. Incorporating the theme of Diversity, the program was designed to draw on a wide range of participants’ experience to demonstrate the link between action research and good practice. The forums were designed to account for the needs of both new through to experienced workers.
When conducting consultation in relation to the development of the forums, most services informed us that they were confident in their area of specialisation (whether it be GLBT, Mental Health, Indigenous, etc). Workers indicated however that they were seeking skills in engaging families and young people, as well as identifying better networks through which to refer clients. Overwhelmingly services told us that they hoped to network and interact with other service providers at the forum. ‘Real life stories from other workers on the ground’ were seen to be invaluable.
In response to this feedback and in consultation with FaHCSIA and the Action Research Committee, CMYI developed, what we believe to have been, a really exciting Forum program.

Forum Program Plan
|
Day 1
|
Day 1 kicked off with a multimedia presentation. A facilitator interviewed a panel of stakeholders including service providers, Action Research experts and young people with the purpose of inspiring an interactive discussion on action research and good practice.
Participant directed ‘Break-out sessions’ followed and took us through to lunch and into the afternoon. Forum participants had the opportunity to raise and explore issues they were passionate about in response to the Action Research question: ‘What would it take to improve the outcomes for those we aim to assist?’ Breakout sessions on day 1 focused on observation and reflection and day 2, planning.
At the end of day 1 the facilitator drew out participants’ experience in ‘Sharing the Stories’. A small selection of participants, who were confident/comfortable to do so, were asked to Share their Story or experience of day 1 via such things as narrative, drawing, poem, song, case study, role play.
|
Day 2
|
Day 2 commenced with participants moving back into break-out sessions in order to undertake planning in relation to key issues identified on day 1. Day 2 concluded with a facilitated discussion, ‘The Journey Continues’, which examined how services might translate their learnings into action back at base.
A ‘Community Market Place’ was set-up throughout the forum where participants answered key questions relating to action research, good practice and diversity on a Graffiti Wall. A showcase of good practice examples was on display with a range of tools to support action research back at base. The self directed, interactive nature of the forum enabled both new and more experienced workers to manage their participation in a way that best reflected their level of interest and understanding.
We anticipated that after the forum workers would feel refreshed, reinvigorated and ready to face the challenges and rewards of their working life.
