Publications and Resources - Welcome to NAYSS - Newly Arrived Youth Support Service

Publications and Resources

A range of practical resources have been developed specifically for the NAYSS initiative by CMYI in its Lead Provider capacity. These resources are designed to support good practice in the provision of NAYSS services nationally.

NAYSS Resource Kit (1.65Mb)
The NAYSS Resource Kit is designed to provide NAYSS providers with an easy-to-use reference guide to enhance and support effective, innovative and culturally appropriate delivery of NAYSS services to newly arrived young people. It is intended to reinforce good casework practice and to ensure that services are fully informed about the specialist approaches required for successful outcomes with the NAYSS target group.

Info Sheets

Information Sheet 1: What is the NAYSS Target Group? (155Kb)
This Info Sheet provides background on the NAYSS target group including eligibility criterion, visa categories and information about the issues facing newly arrived young people and their families.

Information Sheet 2: Engaging Newly Arrived Young People, their Families and Communities (153Kb)
Info Sheet 2 provides NAYSS workers with strategies for engaging newly arrived young people, their families and communities. It also identifies key components of effective cross-cultural communication. The strategies conveyed should be understood as the foundations for culturally responsive casework and group work.

Information Sheet 3: Intake and Assessment of Newly Arrived Young People (128Kb)
This Info Sheet presents key issues and strategies for conducting culturally appropriate intake and assessment with newly arrived young people and their families. It should be read alongside NAYSS Info Sheet 2 and the NAYSS Resource Kit.

Information Sheet 4: Family Conflict and the NAYSS Target Group (155Kb)
This Info Sheet outlines the factors affecting family support for newly arrived young people. It discusses the key factors leading to homelessness for this target group and key considerations for NAYSS workers in responding to family conflict and the risk of homelessness.

Information Sheet 5: Working with Interpreters (154Kb)
Info Sheet 5 provides NAYSS workers with guidance in working with interpreters. Engaging a professional interpreter to facilitate communication and enhance understanding is a key component of delivering effective and culturally responsive services.

A Guide to Action Research in NAYSS (1.57MB)
The Newly Arrived Youth Support Service (NAYSS) Resource Kit is designed to provide NAYSS providers with an easy-to-use reference guide to enhance and support effective, innovative and culturally appropriate delivery of NAYSS services to newly arrived young people. It is intended to reinforce good casework practice and to ensure that services are fully informed about the specialist approaches required for successful outcomes with the NAYSS target group.

The Resource Kit was developed by the Centre for Multicultural Youth Issues (CMYI) in conjunction with the Department of Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs (FaHCSIA).

Lead Provider Reports

2nd Quarterly Report from Lead Provider - Oct to Dec 2006 (2.1Mb)
This report covers the activities of the Newly Arrived Youth Support Service (NAYSS) Lead Provider during the period October to December 2006. It is a key accountability mechanism, but also provides an opportunity to ‘observe’ and ‘reflect’ on the Lead Provider Role and the NAYSS Initiative as a whole.

1st Quarterly Report from Lead Provider (3Mb)
This report covers the activities of the Newly Arrived Youth Support Service (NAYSS) Lead Provider for 2005/06. It is a key accountability mechanism, but also documents some emerging issues within the NAYSS Initiative and provides a basis on which to undertake planning for the future role of the Lead Provider.

Outcomes emerging from the NAYSS Initiative (90Kb)
Following observations by the Lead Provider that there had been little or no documentation of outcomes emerging from the NAYSS Initiative to date, we consulted with as many NAYSS staff that we could get in touch with over a couple of days to discuss what they had been observing “on the ground”. The following report is a summary of our discussions with NAYSS staff and is a very preliminary exploration. We have provided FaHCSIA with a copy of this report for further discussions and thinking about how the NAYSS Initiative could be evaluated.
