Supervision and Debriefing in the NAYSS Context
|
The issue of secondary trauma, also known as transference, was raised at the meeting of Phase 1 NAYSS staff in December 2005. It seems there are a range of structures within existing NAYSS providers to address this, but some staff felt they were not supported enough to adequately manage the impact of working with newly arrived young people and families - many of whom have experienced torture and trauma.

As part of an ongoing response to the issue of secondary trauma, this section of the website will include resources and useful links, as well as existing models and thinking on the topic. It will be added to over time and we hope to hear from services directly with their own experiences and models.

To some people, supervision is something for caseworkers - a time to debrief and receive support and counsel when things are tough. However, supervision and the support it brings with it is important for those working in any capacity with young people.

Trauma and torture does not only affect clients, it also causes a secondary trauma in counsellors. Consequently, it is very important for us to understand the impact of the trauma and the way it affects us, as well as to debrief and to have regular supervision sessions and other ways of detaching from the stories we hear.
