What is NAYSS?
The Newly Arrived Youth Support Service (NAYSS) is a federally funded national initiative that provides culturally appropriate services, ranging from early intervention to transition to education, training and employment, to newly arrived young people aged 12 to 21.
Combining service provision with community development strategies, the NAYSS program supports young people who are homeless, or at risk of homelessness, to improve their level of engagement with family, education, training, work and the community. The program incorporates action research with family centred approaches and culturally responsive service delivery that utilises a variety of strategies such as case management, counselling, group work, family mediation and practical support.
To find out more about the NAYSS initiative, go to the NAYSS website.

NAYSS Lead Provider Role
As well as delivering direct services in Melbourne’s southeast through our two NAYSS workers, CMY is also funded as the Lead Provider within the national NAYSS initiative.
As Lead Provider, CMY provides information, services and resources to NAYSS providers, facilitating professional development across services. We are also able to link providers in order to enhance peer communication and support within the program.
What will CMY be providing?
Help Desk
The help desk is designed to provide support to NAYSS service providers. CMY will respond to questions and comments from NAYSS providers about challenges arising from the unique nature of the NAYSS target group.
Professional Development
As a key function of the Lead Provider role, CMY has been engaged by FaCS to contribute to the professional development of NAYSS staff in relation to working within the NAYSS context.
Mentoring
The NAYSS Lead Provider will facilitate mentoring between NAYSS services. This will involve identifying and encouraging mentoring between agencies and staff on areas of common interest and potentially linking this with action research.
Website
The NAYSS website is designed to facilitate professional development through sharing good practice and providing NAYSS services with access to useful resources.
Resources
Several NAYSS resources have been developed by CMY, including a Resource Kit containing principles and strategies for good practice in working with new arrivals, info sheets and a Guide to Action Research in NAYSS.
