What does the Refugee Youth Resettlement Team do?

Funded by the Department of Immigration Multicultural and Indigenous Affairs through the Community Settlement Support Scheme (CSSS), there are two components to the Refugee Youth Resettlement Team – the Young Refugees in the Picture project and the Statewide Refugee Youth Development and Policy Program.

The resettlement team undertakes capacity building to support generalist youth and settlement workers to work more effectively with refugee young people in their region with a priority focus in 2005-6 on the Cities of Whittlesea and Shepparton/Cobram.

The team also provide statewide training around good practice principles for working with refugee young people, sector resourcing, policy forums on emerging issues for refugee young people, secondary consultation, and data analysis around humanitarian youth arrivals.

A significant component of the refugee youth resettlement work at CMY involves supporting refugee youth groups to create and sustain their organisations. In 2006 we will create a database of youth groups and seek ways to encourage connections between youth groups and young leaders to share ideas and support one another.

BI-CULTURAL YOUTH WORKER FORUMS

  • Are you working with CLD young people and come from a CLD or refugee background yourself?
  • Are there specific issues for you in working within your language or cultural community that other youth and family workers don’t face?
  • Have you moved from another professional background into community work?
  • Trying to find ways to help your organisation understand the work you do?

We know there are complexities to bi-cultural work with young people and families, whether you are working within your community or cross culturally with those from a range of backgrounds. This forum is a chance to discuss the complexities of bi-cultural youth work, the solutions you have found, and what supports you would like to see in the future.

CMY will continue hosting the bi-cultural youth and community worker forums in 2007.

For more information about these free forums, contact Diana Amato, Co-ordinator - Community and Sector Development, on (03) 9340 3700 or email info@cmy.net.au

WHAT IS GOOD SETTLEMENT?

In 2006, the Refugee Youth Resettlement Team held a series of consultations and a forum to gather information about what are good settlement services for refugee young people. Information from these consultations were used to inform a policy paper. "Settling In: Exploring Good Settlement for Refugee Young People in Australia", explores definitions of ‘good settlement’, investigates our current settlement service system and makes a series of recommendations.

Anyone interested in collaborating with us to explore a blueprint for refugee youth resettlement in Australia is welcome to contact Diana Amato, Co-ordinator - Community and Sector Development, on (03) 9340 3700 or email

WHAT IS A YOUTH SERVICE?

CMY has identified that a number of communities have concerns about young people accessing youth services, including voicing concerns about whether youth services encourage young people to leave home. CLD young people and families often lack information about what youth services in Australia are like, what support is available to them, and what their rights are when accessing these services.

In 2006 CMY produced a translated resource for families and young people about youth services that explores these issues.

Any service that is willing to assist with further translations or collaborate with the publication in any way is encouraged to email
damato@cmy.net.au
